Beverly Langley, Finding Joy in Quarantine

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’” – Erma Bombeck

Joy is defined as a feeling of pleasure and happiness, despite difficult circumstances. For instance, ruminations on the natural world, the innocence of a child, and love after loss are examples of joy.

Finding Joy in Quarantine represents places and things that brought Oklahoma City-based artist Beverly Langley joy and hope amid the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. For several months, Langley sheltered in place to stay healthy and to protect herself from the virus spreading across the nation. Rather than sink into sadness at the state of the world, Langley decided to use her love of art to combat the fear and confusion happening outside of her walls. The result of that willpower—her resolve to experience joy despite her circumstances—is a collection of 70 intricate watercolor pieces depicting the laws of nature and the meaning in landscapes.

Inspired in part by Nila Morrow of Southern Nazarene University and Oklahoma City artist Cheryl Swanson, Langley’s art represents her deep appreciation for the natural world and commitment to use the gifts she has been given to inspire others. As a way to further make the best of a difficult situation, Langley paid for the matte finish on all paintings with the stimulus money she received from the government during the pandemic.

Proceeds from this exhibit will be split between the Concordia Life Plan Community Foundation and VillagesOKC, two organizations who promote aging responsibly and who Langley says kept her inspired and hopeful throughout quarantine.

Paintings will be $30 and $60.
